Senior
Companions are low-income volunteers, age 60+ who serve 20 hours per week providing
on-going support services to adults, especially older adults who are homebound. Services
provided by Senior Companions include daily tasks such as
companionship-talking and listening, transportation, peer
counseling, grocery shopping, meal preparation and light
housekeeping.
The Corporation for National and Community Service
is the federal funding source of this program.
The SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM is proud of its 47
companions. Last year, they volunteered 50,407 hours to help the 98
frail elderly, for a value of $302,454. This program saved a total
of $864,000 in nursing home/assisted living facility costs.
Benefits
of being a Senior Companion include:

A non taxable
stipend of $2.65 per hour which does not affect SSI, disability
or other similar programs.

Mileage paid
to and from the work site within a ten mile radius.

On duty
insurance.
-
Annual
physical exam required-program can assist with expense.
-
4 hours each
of sick and vacation leave accumulated monthly.
-
Compensated
while receiving 40 hours of training.
-
Four hours of
in-service training will be provided each month.
